Varies between countries – Where are you?
In my opinion, a good level of fitness and a reasonable knowledge of at least one maybe two sports that you enjoy are pre-requisites although there is nothing to stop an unfit overweight person doing the qualifications required.
This would be silly though – as a PT you advertise your skills and knowledge with your own body. If you don’t look good yourself, people will have far less confidence in you. If this happens all the qualifications you have don’t mean a thing – they’ll not use your services and therefore you won’t make any money at it.
Remember you may well have to work unsociable hours too. Most people train outside the standard working day which means you have to fit in round them.
Most clients want to talk and do a bit of training rather than training as hard as they really should. Part of your job is to motivate them but also to listen. Excellent interpersonal skills are vital.
Qualifications can depend on where you are in the world although some are recognised across borders.
